PDF downloads

The following questions relate to issues downloaded or purchased on The Dirt website as PDF files. For information on issues downloaded or purchased via our iOS app, see the iOS devices section.

How can I read PDF issues?

PDF issues are designed to be read on your computer. You will need to install the free Adobe Acrobat Reader to read them.

I clicked the download link but it opened the PDF in my browser. How do I download the PDF to my hard disk?

When you open a PDF in a web browser, you can mouse over the display to cause buttons to display. One of these buttons will be the download button. The buttons might look like this:

Just click the Download button to save the PDF to your hard disk.

How can I read PDF issues on my Kindle or tablet?

The process is the same for reading any PDF files on Kindle or your tablet. Since the process can vary widely depending on your Kindle version, tablet, etc. we recommend that you do a search online for something like “read PDF on my [device]. Follow the instructions to read PDFs from The Dirt on your device.

I purchased PDF issues but I didn’t get an email with my download links.

Please check your spam and junk email folders for an email from no-reply@thedirtonorganicgardening.com. The email is addressed to the same email you entered when you ordered. This email would have arrived within 30 minutes of your purchase.

If you can’t find the email, or if your links have expired or don’t work, fill out the form at the bottom of this page and we will contact you to help resolve the issue.

My links expired.

The download links in your email expire 7 days after purchase. If you got free PDFs, just order them again and go through the checkout process. If you paid money for PDFs, you will need to contact us with the form at the bottom of this page to get new links.

I subscribed to The Dirt on my iPad/iPhone but I can't download PDFs from the website unless I purchase them.

We have made PDF downloads available via our website for our readers who do not have an iOS device, and these PDF files are completely separate from the issues available on iOS. When you subscribe on iPad/iPhone, the issues will be delivered to your iOS device in a format optimized for that platform. When you purchase a PDF, you receive a download link to download the PDF onto your computer.

If you want to get PDF issues in addition to getting them via our app on iPad/iPhone, you will need to purchase the PDF downloads separately.

How can I get a discount coupon code for purchasing PDF issues?

We regularly offer discount coupon codes through our newsletter, and also through Instagram and Facebook. To get discount codes when we announce them, use the form at right to sign up for our newsletter. You can also follow us on Instagram and Like us on Facebook.

The following questions are about The Dirt app on iPad and iPhone. If you have questions about PDF downloads from our website, please see the PDF downloads section.

I can't renew my six-month subscription.

As of August 2017, six-month subscriptions are no longer available. To continue receiving The Dirt on Organic Gardening magazine on a monthly basis, we invite you to subscribe to a one-month subscription. This subscription will automatically bill you each month and deliver The Dirt magazine to you, as it did with your six-month subscription.

The Dirt won’t download on my iPhone/iPad.

If you don’t have your phone connected to a wireless internet service (Wifi) it can take what seems like forever to download. Make sure your internet connection is on, then try again.

I subscribed, but I can get only one issue.

A subscription gives you access to the current issue of The Dirt, and a certain number of future issues depending on your subscription level. A subscription doesn’t include access to past issues. If you want past issues, you would need to purchase those individually.

I don’t have an iPad or iPhone. Is there any other way to get The Dirt?

YES! The Dirt is still available through Apple for iPads, iPhones and iPod Touches. And now you can also buy single issues in PDF format to download onto your computer.

We are also exploring other delivery platforms. If you want to get all The Dirt news as soon as it’s available, get on our mailing list.

My copy of The Dirt crashes when I try to open it on my iPad or iPhone. What should I do?

Apple has a great site that provides step-by-step instructions for debugging crashes. Click here to visit.

I subscribed on my iPhone. I would like to be able to read it on my iPad as well.

You can do so, as long as you are signed in on both devices with the same Apple ID, The Dirt should automatically appear on each. Also note on the navigation page that The Dirt is available in two formats—one designed for easier reading on an iPhone, and one  specifically for iPad. For more information on how to sign in with your Apple ID, see this help page on the Apple site.

I subscribed to The Dirt but I still see the yellow Subscribe button and no issue has downloaded.

This is something that can happen due to a connection error between the iPad and the Apple servers.

  1. Fully close the magazine. Tap the home button to ensure you have exited the magazine, then double tap the home button.
  2. All the opened apps will appear at the bottom of the ipad. Press and hold on the magazine, and the apps will start to shake. Tap  the red minus sign to fully close the magazine.
  3. Make sure you are logged in with the same Apple ID that you used to subscribe to the magazine. To do this, tap on the Settings app, scroll down and tap on the store app, double check that the same Apple ID is being used. if not, sign out and sign in with the correct Apple ID. For more information on how to sign in with your Apple ID, see this help page on the Apple site.
  4. Relaunch the magazine. Go to the Newsstand App and tap the magazine to launch it. The splash page will appear and then the magazine home screen will show. The page should be updated, and now the yellow subscribe button should be replaced with a grey Restore button.
  5. Restore all purchases. Tap on the restore button to re-download all previously purchased magazine issues.
When I try to view my issues, I am asked for an Account Number.

This can happen when Apple was unable to charge you for purchases with the payment method you specified. See this Apple help page for information on resolving this issue.

Please note that The Dirt does not have, or have access to, anything resembling an “Account Number” that relates to your subscription; this is entirely an Apple-generated message. If you continue to have this problem after updating your payment method, contact us using the form below and we will try to help you out with the problem.

I upgraded to a new iOS and no longer appear to be subscribed.

Tap on the yellow subscribe button, then tap “Restore All Purchases” (you must be logged in with the same Apple ID used to subscribe or purchase magazine originally). Apple will restore your purchases.

Can I read The Dirt on an Android device?

Currently, The Dirt is available only for iOS devices. We are considering making it available for Android if there is enough demand. If you want to read The Dirt on Android, please drop us a line with the form at the end of this page.

How can I cancel my subscription?

The subscribe/unsubscribe process is handled through Apple; The Dirt cannot cancel your subscription for you directly.

If you have a one-month subscription, please see this Apple support page for information on managing your app subscriptions, including unsubscribing.

If you have a six-month subscription, you will be unable to cancel this subscription in the usual way; it won’t appear as an option when you follow Apple’s instructions because we no longer offer this type of subscription (see “I can’t renew my six-month subscription” above for details). However, your six-month subscription will cancel automatically at the end of the six-month period. so there is no need to cancel it manually.
